While negotiating the muddy roads of the Magaliesberg area, we drove past this old man. I asked him wether he spoke English or Afrikaans. He answered that it was Afrikaans, but it sounded like he understood very little of either of the two. Unfortunately these are the only languages I am able to make myself understandable in, so I gestured the camera to him and he nodded smilingly.
When I showed him the shot on the back of the screen, his face lit up, he patted me on the shoulder and said thank you, and were off on his way again.
Sometimes all you need to understand each other, is a picture and a smile.
